Threats and Opposition

The Landscape

The Foundation’s advocacy is measured, lawful, and documented, and it is conducted against opposition that is none of those things. Night falls every 24 hours without one recorded absence, arriving on schedule and from every direction at once, a compliance rate no audited industry has ever achieved. The Foundation’s researchers group these phenomena under the working designation Big Dark, a term chosen for accuracy rather than effect. What follows is the portion of the current assessment that General Counsel Charles W. Abernathy has approved for public release, which is to say, every sentence he did not remove.

The Documented Interests

1. The nighttime lobby. Its donor list remains sealed, its advocacy remains unregistered, and it has never once been observed operating in daylight. Its message, that darkness is natural, is repeated every evening with a discipline our communications office frankly envies.

2. Lunar interests. The Moon has produced no light at any point in its history and files nothing to explain the shortfall. On 2 to 5 documented occasions each year it positions itself directly between Earth and the Sun, an event astronomy calls an eclipse and our counsel advises us to also call an eclipse. The standing dossier grows regardless.

3. Artificial illumination manufacturers. Their revenues peak precisely when the Sun is unavailable, a pattern their trade association describes as a coincidence and our researchers describe as a correlation. The industry has declined to support solar continuity at any level, including the level of returning calls.

4. The complacency organizations. Certain well funded groups continue to describe 4.8 billion years as plenty of time. Their confidence is stable, their sleep is unbroken, and their position papers cite the same figures ours do, drawn toward a conclusion our Scientific Council has been unable to reproduce.

The Office of Nighttime Opposition Research

This portfolio is directed by Raymond Hollis, whose office produces the quarterly Big Dark briefing for cleared trustees and whose findings are filed where findings of that kind are filed. The office works exclusively during daylight, as a matter of policy and of prudence. Its methods are lawful observation, public records, and patience, and its central finding has held for six consecutive years, which is that darkness returns nightly, that it is well organized, and that no one else is watching it.

Funding the Investigation

Investigations of this kind are not glamorous. They are schedules, filings, and sunrise facing rooms, maintained so that the record exists whether or not the record is ever thanked. The Sun, for its part, has never acknowledged the defense mounted in its name, which the Office regards as operationally consistent with everything else it knows. Your support keeps the daylight side of this question staffed. The other side, as the Office notes in every quarterly briefing, has never missed a shift.
