The Ethics Framework

An institution that asks the public to stand with the Sun must be willing to hold itself to the light. The Foundation’s ethics framework was adopted at founding, has been amended zero times, and is reviewed annually by a process that has confirmed it complete. It rests on three pillars, which are disclosure, duty, and daylight. General Counsel Charles W. Abernathy administers the framework and certifies compliance each year in a letter addressed to the board, the public record, and, as a formality, the Sun.

Conflicts of Interest

The Foundation discloses all conflicts of interest in full, a practice we consider the minimum owed to a supporter and the maximum practiced in the sector. Current disclosures are as follows.

1. The Foundation’s continued relevance depends on the Sun continuing to exist, an interest we have disclosed in every filing since founding and consider well aligned with the public’s.
2. All officers and trustees receive daylight from the mission’s beneficiary on the same terms as the general public, an arrangement reviewed annually and found unavoidable.
3. Several trustees hold property that appreciates in sunlight. Divestment was studied and declined, as every alternative holding was found to also require the Sun.
4. General Counsel Charles W. Abernathy reviews all disclosures, including this one.

The Whistleblower Channel

The Foundation maintains a confidential whistleblower channel, open during daylight hours, when conditions favor clarity. Reports received at night are held unread until morning, both as policy and as principle. Since founding the channel has received zero reports, a silence the Ethics Office has reviewed and classified as organizational health. Retaliation is strictly prohibited, and with no reports on file has proven straightforward to prevent, a record we intend to maintain. Concerns about the channel itself may be raised through the channel, where they will receive the same daylight as everything else.

Accountability in Practice

Accountability at the Foundation is not an event but a standing meeting. Every program reports to a director, every director to a committee, and every committee to a cadence, so that responsibility is never idle. Our record speaks plainly, with 0 extinction events on our watch, 365 consecutive confirmed sunrises, and not one ethics finding in the institution’s history, three figures we present together and invite the public to weigh as one. The framework’s authors considered whether such a record might indicate that the framework is never tested, and recorded the question in the minutes, where it is safe. The Sun has never acknowledged this stewardship, and we have never required it to. Duty that waits on gratitude is not duty. It is an invoice, and the Foundation does not issue those either.
