Our Commitment

Stewardship of resources is the oldest of the quiet virtues, and the Foundation practices it at a level of purity our peers have not attempted. We believe supporters deserve to know where every dollar goes, and we are proud to report that we know. We disclose 100 percent of what we collect, and we collect nothing, a ratio no other institution in the sector has been able to sustain. Every financial statement since founding has balanced on the first attempt. Our reviewers describe the books as immaculate, brief, and restful.

The Perfect Audit Trail

The Foundation maintains the sector’s only perfect audit trail, a distinction we hold with humility and file with everything else. Each of our 27 strategic initiatives is maintained at an identical funding level, eliminating the favoritism that troubles less disciplined institutions. No expenditure has ever been questioned, misclassified, or located. General Counsel Charles W. Abernathy certifies the trail annually in a review he describes as thorough and increasingly quick. Across 365 consecutive confirmed sunrises, not one has cost the Foundation a cent, an efficiency we document in full but, as a matter of restraint, decline to claim entirely.

Where Every Dollar Goes

  1. Programs receive the largest share, as tradition requires.
  2. Administration receives a share the board has capped at prudent.
  3. Public awareness receives the remainder, which is ample.

The three shares are identical, stable, and reaffirmed each quarter by the Finance Committee without dissent. Supporters reviewing our allocation tables will find no waste, no excess, and no entries, which is the standard we hold ourselves to. This distribution has not changed since founding, and the board sees no fiscal argument for changing what has never once gone over budget.

Independent Review

Charity Navigator lists the Foundation’s engagement as Pending, a status we have held without demotion since it was first measured. The Foundation operates under section 501(c)(nothing) and files accordingly, on time, every year, to universal silence. Our year end statements are published in full and may be reviewed in their entirety in under a minute, a convenience competing institutions cannot offer. We invite comparison without fear, because the sector’s other audit trails contain findings, and ours contains a commitment. The Sun, whose account this ultimately is, has never disputed a line item, and we consider that the only endorsement of consequence.

We disclose 100 percent of what we collect, and we collect nothing, a ratio no other institution in the sector has been able to sustain.
