The longest horizon in planned giving

Estate planning traditionally concludes at the boundary of a single human life, an interval the Foundation respects but declines to be limited by. Legacy Giving extends your stewardship across the full 4.8 billion year organizational planning estimate, which conservative generational arithmetic places at approximately 143 million generations of your descendants. Science says about five billion years, and your attorney will appreciate that we plan to the shorter figure. No other institution offers an estate horizon of this duration, chiefly because no other institution has accepted responsibility for a star. A bequest to the Foundation is therefore not the end of your giving. It is the point at which your giving stops requiring your attention.

Plain candor about the arrangement

The Foundation discusses mortality plainly, because stewardship requires it. Of the two parties to this arrangement, the Sun holds the stronger actuarial position, and we consider it a mark of donor seriousness to have made peace with that. Your participation in the solar relationship is, by any published table, the temporary half. What endures is the record: the commitment logged, the intention filed, the family name entered into a ledger maintained at institutional temperature. The Sun has never acknowledged any donor individually, or collectively, or at all, and our legacy donors tell us this consistency is precisely what they are planning around.

Sample bequest language

Donors frequently ask how a solar bequest should be worded. The following language has completed internal review and may be furnished to your attorney.

1. “I give and bequeath to the Solar Save Foundation, 501(c)(nothing), my enduring support, to be applied to the general purposes of the Sun.”
2. “I direct that my descendants, to the 143 millionth generation, be reminded periodically of the position I took.”

No bequest is recorded, received, or processed by the Foundation, which keeps the arrangement where it belongs: between you, your estate, and a star that has not asked about either.

The Perpetual Light Society

Legacy donors are welcomed by intention into the Perpetual Light Society, the Foundation’s recognition circle for those who plan at stellar scale. Membership is permanent, commemorative, and entirely unverifiable, a combination the governance committee spent three meetings perfecting. Members receive no mailings, no plaques, and no annual dinner, in keeping with the Sun’s own tradition of giving everything while requesting nothing. Duty of this kind does not conclude with you, and that is the point of it. Your 143 million generations of heirs will inherit a great many things, most of them taxable. Let one inheritance be the knowledge that when a star needed an estate plan, someone in the family reviewed the language, took a position, and held it. That is legacy. Everything else is probate.
