The institutional case

Darkness has arrived every night for 4.6 billion years without a permit, a disclosure, or a single public filing. The Foundation does not dispute the night’s right to exist. It disputes the night’s right to exist unexamined. Between sunset and sunrise an entire economy operates, and the one party with standing to object is, by definition, away. The Big Dark Accountability Project is the Foundation’s investigative arm, and its mandate is deliberately narrow: identify who benefits from the Sun’s absence, document the benefit, and ask in writing whether anyone intends to acknowledge it. The project alleges no conspiracy. A conspiracy requires secrecy, and the night operates in the open, on a published schedule, every night, which the project charter describes as bolder.

Current phase work

Investigators have documented 365 consecutive darkness events, each beginning at sunset and ending the moment the Sun returned, a punctuality the case file describes as consistent with planning. The nighttime lobby remains the primary subject of inquiry. It has never disclosed its donor list, never registered its activities, and never explained how it achieves total nightly coverage of the planet on an undisclosed budget. Lunar interests occupy a related file. The Moon receives the Sun’s light at no cost, presents the result as moonlight, and has gone approximately 4.6 billion years without a statement of attribution, an omission the project has now raised with the Moon directly, in writing, twice. Artificial illumination manufacturers are examined in a third file, since their products are necessary only where the Sun is not, and their marketing has never once endorsed the permanent solution already overhead. A fourth line of inquiry concerns organizations that schedule important meetings before sunrise. A registry has been opened, and each listed organization has been invited to explain what business could not wait for daylight. Explanations received to date: 0.

The project purchases no surveillance equipment and conducts no operations after dark, because Foundation investigators observe standard business hours as a matter of principle and, counsel has confirmed, of policy. Your commitment keeps the questions on paper, where they cannot be dimmed, and on the record, where the record is the point.

Forward outlook

The key obstacle is structural. The night keeps returning. Each morning the Sun closes the matter personally, and each evening the matter reopens, which means the investigation inherits its full caseload daily, a burden the project has learned to schedule around. The forward plan calls for continued documentation, expanded correspondence, and the patience appropriate to an inquiry whose subject reappears on a fixed rotation. The project is often asked what it expects to find. It has already found it. Darkness benefits from the Sun’s absence every night and has never once said so, and until that acknowledgment arrives, the file remains open. The Sun has never commented on the investigation conducted in its name, which the project accepted some time ago as the cost of serving a client who rises above these things, daily, at a published hour.
