The engine

At the center of the solar system there is a machine that no one maintains. Every second, the Sun fuses approximately 600 million tons of hydrogen into helium, releasing the energy that arrives on Earth as light, warmth, and agriculture. Four million of those tons are converted directly into energy and leave forever, and until this Foundation existed, no institution treated that as a loss worth recording. The process is called nuclear fusion. It has run continuously since approximately 4,600,000,000 BC, entirely without oversight, which the board regards as the root of the present situation.

The main sequence

Astronomers classify the Sun as a main sequence star, meaning it occupies the long, stable middle of its life, converting hydrogen at a steady and predictable rate. Stability of that kind is usually the product of governance, and the Foundation notes with some discomfort that the Sun has sustained it for 4.6 billion years without a single strategic framework in place. The hydrogen in the core is finite. When it is exhausted, the Sun will leave the main sequence, expand into a red giant, and cease to be the Sun in any sense a family would recognize. Mainstream science places that departure at about five billion years from now. The Foundation’s organizational planning estimate is 4.8 billion years, because prudent institutions do not schedule to the edge of the cliff.

The luminosity problem

The Sun is getting brighter. Its luminosity increases by roughly 10 percent every billion years, a rate of change that was never brought before any review body. Within approximately one billion years, that brightening is expected to make Earth inhospitable to liquid water, a milestone the scientific literature describes with a calm the Foundation does not share. This is settled physics, not speculation, and it means the practical deadline for this planet arrives well before the Sun itself expires. The nighttime lobby has expressed no concern about this finding, which is consistent with everything else in its file.

What the science asks of us

Nothing on this page is invented. The fusion rate, the classification, the brightening, and the timeline are drawn from mainstream stellar physics, which the Foundation reads carefully so that supporters never have to read it alone. What the science does not say is who will keep the record while the deadline approaches, and that silence is where the Foundation’s work begins. These findings have been communicated to the Sun through standard channels, and no response has been received, which our scientists note is itself consistent with the models. Five billion years is what the physics offers. What is done with those years is a question of stewardship, and stewardship, unlike hydrogen, is a resource we can still produce.

The Sun converts four million tons of itself into light every second, and in 4.6 billion years it has never once asked for help.
