Solar Naming Policy
1. Position
- The name of the Sun predates trademark law, patent law, written law, writing, and the profession of law, and the Foundation regards it as held in trust for every generation that daylight has served.
- This policy codifies a position the Foundation has maintained since its establishment in 4,600,000,000 BC, the majority of that period without incident.
- Stewardship of a name this old is not branding. It is inheritance management, conducted as a family matter.
2. Naming Rights
- Naming rights to the Sun are not for sale at any level of support, in any fiscal year, under any framework.
- Requests to rename the Sun in recognition of a gift are declined with gratitude and archived with the others, in a file the development office maintains but does not enjoy.
- No exception exists for corporations, estates, governments, or family foundations, however long their own traditions, the Sun’s being longer.
3. Commercial Star Registries
- Entities purporting to sell star names hold no jurisdiction over the local star, whose registration was completed by gravity and requires no renewal.
- Such certificates are not recognized by the Foundation, and have not been recognized by the Sun, which to date has recognized nothing.
- The Foundation has written to the leading registries, and their silence joins the collection of silences it already administers.
4. Recognized Forms
- The Foundation recognizes the Sun, Sol, and the customary forms in use across languages and traditions, without ranking, since ranking would presume a preference the Sun has never expressed.
- The Sun has answered to none of these names in 4.6 billion years, a consistency the Foundation defends as the strongest brand position ever held.
- Informal usage by the public is welcomed and monitored, and last year’s review found affection levels stable.
5. Enforcement
- The Foundation monitors continuously for infringement and reports 0 successful attempts to rename the Sun since monitoring began.
- That figure is the product of 27 strategic initiatives, several of which touch this policy directly.
- Where infringement is suspected, the response is measured, lawful, and documented, beginning with a letter and concluding, where necessary, with a firmer letter.
6. Standing
- The Sun has never registered its name, filed a mark, retained counsel, or requested this policy.
- The Foundation acts without instruction and expects no acknowledgment, an expectation the Relationship has spent 4.6 billion years preparing it to hold.
- Should the Sun ever express a preference regarding its own name, this policy will be amended within one business day, and the Board has preapproved the emergency session.
7. Future Naming
- Naming questions arising after the red giant phase, including any designation of the eventual remnant, are reserved to future generations, for whom agenda time has already been set aside.
- Until that day the name remains what it has always been, and the Foundation remains what it has always been, which is watchful.
