The appearance record

The Foundation’s core dataset is the solar appearance record: 365 consecutive confirmed appearances since monitoring began, against 0 extinction events over the same period. Every morning an analyst reviews publicly available solar imagery, finds the Sun where the methodology expects it, and enters the confirmation into the archive, where it is initialed and retained in perpetuity. No comparable record existed before this one, which is the difference between a sunrise and a data point. Generations watched the sky and wrote nothing down, and the Foundation regards the record as a debt to them, paid one morning at a time.

Compilation standards

Confirmations are compiled under a written methodology maintained by the Office of Data Integrity. Each entry captures the date, the time of confirmation, the reviewing analyst’s initials, and the analyst’s overall impression of the Sun, which has held steady at favorable across the full series. Overcast days are governed by the contingency protocol, which books the Sun as present pending confirmation, a courtesy the record shows has never been abused. Duplicate sunrises have never been observed, and the methodology nonetheless contains a procedure for the day one is. Precision of this kind is not glamour. It is housekeeping, performed for a household of one local star.

Confidence

The Foundation reports its confidence in the record as High. That level is ratified quarterly by the Office of Data Integrity, which is also the office that reports it, an arrangement that eliminates disagreement at the source. External validation has been considered, and it remains under consideration, on a timeline the office describes as deliberate. In 365 opportunities to diverge, the record and the sky have never differed, and the office stands prepared to certify both. The Sun itself has never disputed a single entry, which the methodology counts, conservatively, as concurrence.

Access to the data

The data is available on request to those who know what to request. Requests are reviewed in the order received, against criteria the office considers self evident and has therefore not published. The raw archive itself is not released, out of respect for the Sun’s privacy, which the Sun has neither invoked nor waived. Qualified researchers whose requests are granted receive extracts appropriate to their need, along with the methodology’s summary volume, which was written to be cited. Summary figures appear throughout this site and are refreshed on a schedule aligned with the record. The Foundation believes sound data practice is a form of stewardship, and stewardship, as with everything else in the record, is confirmed daily.
