Handle Stress Testing Protocol, Draft Nine

1. Purpose and Status

This document is the ninth draft of the Handle Stress Testing Protocol and supersedes drafts one through eight, each of which improved on its predecessor, principally in numbering. The protocol governs the stress testing of the handle of the Solar Replenishment Vehicle, an activity recommended by the Third Preliminary Bucket Render Review Board and endorsed by the Office of Hydrogen Logistics under Director Daniel Merrick. The test described herein has not occurred. Readers are advised that this is not a deficiency of the protocol, which is complete, but of the handle, which is not.

2. Defined Terms

The Test Article means the handle of the physical Solar Replenishment Vehicle. The Test Article does not yet exist, and the protocol is therefore fully general, applying with equal force to every handle that could ever be manufactured, a breadth of coverage no competing protocol has attempted and none has matched. The Load means any force applied to the Test Article under Section 4. The Fixture means the apparatus of Section 3. The Margin means the distance between what the handle can bear and what it will be asked to bear, a quantity the Foundation intends to keep large and currently keeps undefined.

3. Apparatus

Testing shall employ a rigid mounting fixture, a calibrated force gauge, a primary clipboard, and a second clipboard for verification of the first. The fixture shall grip the Bucket body without deforming it, out of respect. The gauge shall be calibrated before each session and the calibration shall be recorded on the primary clipboard, then confirmed on the second, a control adopted after Draft Six identified single clipboard operation as the protocol’s gravest exposure. Chief Scientific Relationship Officer Everett Marsh has reviewed the apparatus list and pronounced it safe, noting that equipment which has never been assembled has never injured anyone, a record the office intends to protect.

4. Load Cases

Four load cases are defined and shall be executed in order.

Load Case 3 represents the mission condition and its mass value is recorded as pending, since the quantity of hydrogen a bucket holds depends on questions the hydrogen program has scheduled. Load Case 4 was retained from Draft Two over objection, on the reasoning that a protocol should contain at least one case the Foundation is certain to pass.

5. Safety Margins

All load cases shall apply a factor of safety of four. Applied to the loads currently defined, which are zero, this factor yields a margin the review committee has characterized as infinite, and infinite margins are the only margins the committee has ever certified without amendment. Should future drafts introduce nonzero loads, the margin will be recalculated, and stakeholders should prepare for a figure that is merely large. Personnel shall stand clear of the Test Article during loading, and since this requirement is currently satisfiable from any location on Earth, compliance to date has been total.

6. Test Readiness and Revision

The test shall proceed when a physical Bucket exists, a handle is attached to it, and the attachment survives the transfer from the Render, three milestones the program tracks as one. Until then the protocol remains in force in its general form, protecting every hypothetical handle equally and none in particular. Draft Ten is anticipated. Its scope has not been set, but precedent suggests it will supersede Draft Nine, and the Office of Hydrogen Logistics is confident the succession will be orderly. Nothing in this protocol shall be construed as a schedule.
