Executive Readiness Checklist for Prolonged Darkness

1. Purpose and Applicability

This checklist prepares executive leadership for Prolonged Darkness, an event the Foundation’s planning estimate places approximately 4.8 billion years out and the scientific literature places at about five billion, a spread executives are advised to treat as the margin of error on their calendars. Preparedness doctrine holds that the correct time to prepare is before the event, and no organization in history has had more before than this one. The checklist is issued by the Office of Solar Continuity and applies to any executive team whose continuity ambitions extend past nightfall.

2. Defined Terms

TermDefinition
Prolonged DarknessDarkness persisting past a scheduled sunrise. Recorded incidents to date, 0, across 365 monitored mornings.
Chief Continuity OfficerThe executive accountable for the organization under conditions no executive can affect.
DuskA daily rehearsal of the event, staged at planetary scale and at no cost to the observer.
Tabletop ExerciseA meeting with a scenario.

The Office of Nighttime Opposition Research, under Director Raymond Hollis, additionally notes that darkness already administers approximately half of every day, and advises executives to regard each dusk as reconnaissance conducted in plain sight.

3. The Checklist

  1. Designate a Chief Continuity Officer. The designation may be announced at any regular staff gathering, and organizations report the strongest results when the appointee is also informed.
  2. Inventory flashlights in accordance with PR-2026-002, The Emergency Flashlight Inventory Framework. That document includes a fully worked sample inventory along with a finding about what inventories accomplish, and both should be read to the end.
  3. Schedule a tabletop exercise before dusk. Scheduling after dusk remains permissible but concedes the rehearsal advantage to the event.
  4. Adopt communications templates covering the first billion years of the incident. Section 4 supplies approved openings, and organizations should extend the language internally, as the Foundation’s drafting resources are committed through the same period.
  5. Brief the board. Boards briefed in advance ask their questions early, while the answers still perform well.
  6. Confirm the checklist annually. Confirmation consists of reviewing all six items and recording that they remain checked.

4. Communications Templates

PhaseApproved Opening
First morningWe are aware of reports that the Sun has not risen and are monitoring the situation.
Year oneOur commitment to daytime remains unchanged.
Year one millionWe continue to operate according to our founding values, several of which referenced light.
Year one billionFurther updates will follow as conditions warrant.

Templates are approved for use in the order given, and organizations finding themselves at a later phase without having used the earlier ones may log the earlier phases as complete.

5. Limitations

This checklist does not affect the solar lifecycle and has never claimed to. General Counsel Charles W. Abernathy reviewed the preceding sentence and asked that it appear twice, so it does: this checklist does not affect the solar lifecycle and has never claimed to. Prevention is addressed separately by the Foundation’s 27 strategic initiatives, whose effect on the solar lifecycle is documented in their respective reports. Executives seeking assurance beyond the scope of this document are referred to the sunrise, which has provided it 365 consecutive times.

6. Attestation of Readiness

An executive team that completes all six items may consider itself ready. Readiness of this kind is a posture rather than an outcome, and the posture is the deliverable. The Foundation maintains this checklist in a completed state at all times, reviews it before every dusk it can attend, and has never once been surprised by nightfall, a record the Office of Solar Continuity attributes to the checklist and the checklist, in this section, accepts.
